Episode 81 - Emmy Award-winning Reporter, Jen Maxfield Shares True Stories of Overcoming Adversity in her New Book, More After the Break
Show Notes

Jen Maxfield is an Emmy Award-winning reporter and anchor who started at NBC New York in 2013. Previously, she was a reporter and substitute anchor for Eyewitness News (ABC7). In her 22-year career, she has interviewed over 10,000 people and shared their stories. But then what? After the story has aired, what happens to people forever changed by tragedy, loss, and triumph?

This interview is about Jen Maxfield's new book, More After the Break; A Reporter Returns to Ten Unforgettable News Stories. The message that comes through is our ability to overcome adversity and build emotional resilience through personal healing. Jen speaks about kindness to humankind and how we can be empathetic and make a difference no matter who we are, where we are, or what we do.

Jen and I talk about kindness, emotional healing, boundaries, overcoming difficult emotions, noticing negative self-talk, pushing past our comfort zone and making a difference.

Here are the time-stamps to help you recognize the author's message. Enjoy!

7:50 We can show kindness in our day-to-day lives

12:30 We all need emotional healing

13:00 Handling emotions while re-living hard times

13:50 The importance of separating a stressful job life from our home life

14:00 Jen teaches us to compartmentalize

16:40 We overcome our fears and obstacles when we get outside our comfort zone

17:50 We can overcome adversity AND initiate lasting change from the hardship

18:30 When we notice our negative self-talk and push ourselves out of our comfort zone, we can make an impact on the lives of others and make a difference for humanity.

I enjoyed this interview because it speaks to the people behind the story, both the interviewer and the interviewee. We all relate to the stories in the book because we have all faced adversity and learned to overcome it. We are doing the best we can. We are still here. We have a story to tell and a heart that is healing. Our collective selves know we do better and feel better when we support each other and help heal hearts worldwide. Each of us can make a difference–often just outside our comfort zone.
